Flip the Script is a hands-on introduction to the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) — a participatory approach that helps people map relationships, understand power dynamics, identify barriers, and turn those insights into practical action.
Together, we’ll use simple visual tools and exercises to explore how gender and power show up in coffee businesses, supply chains, teams, and partnerships — and what we can actually do about it.
This isn't a lecture on gender. You'll be doing the work.
You’ll learn how to use GALS tools to:
See where gender and power dynamics show up in your own work
Map the people, relationships, and systems that influence change
Identify barriers and opportunities for more inclusive practices
Turn a challenge into a concrete action pathway
Use participatory tools that you can bring back to your team, organization, or partners
Approach gender not only as a “problem to solve,” but as an opportunity to build stronger, more equitable ways of working
Come with a real situation in mind. It could be a challenge you're facing with your team, sourcing relationships, producers, suppliers, or organizational culture.
Don't worry about being a gender expert. You don't need prior knowledge of GALS or gender frameworks.
Be ready to draw, map, question, and share. GALS is highly participatory, so we'll spend much more time doing than listening.
Come prepared to work with others. With a small group, you'll have the opportunity to learn from different perspectives and test the tools together.
You’ll leave with practical tools and a framework you can continue using after the workshop.
